Backend Localization is deprecated and will be removed from the plugin directory on September 2, 2023, 14 years after its first release. With WordPress version 4.7, released in December 2016, the main purpose of this plugin was integrated into core. With WordPress version 5.9, released in February 2022, the only useful missing feature was also integrated into core.

Thanks to everyone who used the plugin, gave constructive feedback, rated it and send me messages on how it helped them with their sites. This was my second WordPress plugin, and it’s surprising still has 2000+ active installations. If you see this message, you are one of them. But now feel free to remove it from your site. You can find my other plugins on my WordPress profile page.

This plugin enables you to run your blog in a different language than the backend of your blog. So you can serve your blog using e.g. German as the default language for the users, but keep English as the language for the administration.
You can choose the language you want to use from all installed language files or you can install additional languages.

Instalación

Installation through WordPress admin pages:

Go to the admin page Plugins -> Add New
Search for kau-boy and choose the plugin
Choose the action install
Click on Install now
Activate the plugin after install has finished (with the link or trough the plugin page)
You might have to edit the settings, especially the language you want to use

Installation using WordPress admin pages:

Download the plugin zip file
Go to the admin page Plugins -> Add New
Choose the Upload link under the Install Plugins headline
Browse for the zip file and click Install Now
Activate the plugin after install has finished (with the link or trough the plugin page)
You might have to edit the settings, especially the language you want to use

Installation using ftp:

Unzip und upload the files to your /wp-content/plugins/ directory
Activate the plugin through the Plugins menu in WordPress
You might have to edit the settings, especially the language you want to use

Preguntas frecuentes

Will my language be available for this plugin?: Every language that is supported by WordPress can be chosen. You just need a copy of the translation files in your WordPress’ language folder.
Do I need this plugin if I use qTranslate?: No you don’t have to. I love qTranslate and use it for my own blog. qTranslate also offers the ability to switch the backend language. But if you don’t want to publish the content of your blog in more than one language, you shouldn’t use qTranslate. I created this plugin for users who only wan’t to switch the backend language without the overhead of any multilingual plugin.

Although WordPress 4.7 introduces the user language feature, this plugin is still tremendously helpful in my customer support job when I have to log in on sites running WordPress in an older version than 4.7. One feature that the WP 4.7 core user language doesn’t provide is to pick your language upon login—which makes this plugin even more helpful in customer support, since navigating for example an RTL back-end to find the profile page can be quite time-consuming when you're not used to it. (I assume the same is true for LTR for other people.) All in all, this plugin is a huge win. I wouldn’t want to miss it in my daily job!

I think we should thank the author for a good job. It was a long time before this feature appeared in the core of WordPress 4.7. Thanks!

This plugin is very useful! Regardless of language you users use, site admin should use English! English used in manuals, tutorials, forums, support articles etc. Industry terms are English by native, and it is much easier to find solutions and understand interface in native language. Thankyou very much for this simple, but awesome plugin!!

If WP wants t truly become multi-lingual as it claims to be wanting - then this plugin's behavior should be part of core! So far it works well with WP 4.4, but I wish the developer would update the plugin compatibility version.
